Who Is Viewing Your Social Media Profile and Where?

Do You have an Social Media Ownership

Strategy for Your Business?

Successfully using social media for business requires a special approach to knowing how to be Social – while retaining your business persona,  keeping control of the ownership of your data and not breaching the ICANN rules regarding spam.

This workshop on April 8, 2011 is being presented by two of the panel from the March 4th, 2011 the City of Perth event “Social Media for your Business” . This workshop is a private event – being held at the same venue.

Social media is the term used to describe a wide range of electronic platforms that are easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Access to every one of those platforms is based upon you having and supplying a valid email address.

Successfully using social media for business requires a special approach to knowing how to be Social – while retaining your business persona,  keeping control of the ownership of your data and not breaching the ICANN rules regarding spam.

Social media is primarily used for three business activities:

  • to centralize the distribution of business information (articles, press releases, product information)
  • to attract new and repeat customers (direct product sales, referral programmes)
  • to build the business brand (marketing, research, customer support, managing reputation)

Essential elements of those activities include a website and an opt-in mailing list. Facebook is competing hard to become your website – rather than you having a separate website, a personal domain and a personal contact database that you control yourself.

Already, many are warning that allowing Facebook to “own” all your business information, contacts, posts and network details for promoting their own platform, is an unacceptable threat to your business integrity. In addition, there is always the risk that your Facebook profile could be removed by Facebook – without redress.  Many Facebook landing pages now include a simple form that allows visitors to provide their name and email address, so that they can be contacted outside the Facebook universe.

There is a clear and compelling business need for you to build, maintain and service your own customer contacts, regardless of their source. Your customers come to you from a very wide universe.  Direct customers, website, emails, introductions, advertising – the list goes on. Almost every website provides access to information and special offers, by requesting nothing more than a name and email address.

If you want to use Social Media to help grow your business profile, you need to be able to contact your network in a variety of ways and at a time that YOU choose.  It is in your best business interests to retrieve the email addresses of your contacts from Facebook and similar platforms and offer them the option of being included in your own personal contacts where you can build a deeper and more personal relationship with them. It is very easy to do and gives you much more security in terms of building your business, long term.
