How A FIFO Mum or Dad Can Still Read Their Kids

A Bedtime Story

A new Australian-first website for families with kids has been launched to help parents and children share stories through Social Media – www.storiesmynanatells.com

The site is the ultimate resource for parents who want to share unique and engaging stories with their children, encourage them to read and help overcome the anxiety of separation.

Children’s author and creator of the website, Lesley Dewar, said while the opportunity to be employed in the mining boom is financially compelling, the Fly In, Fly Out (FIFO) lifestyle has disrupted many family lives.

With a new boom predicted to start in the North West of WA, the number of families affected will continue to increase.

“Stories My Nana Tells provides a regular and unique connection between adults (parents and grandparents) and children in a fun and entertaining way, anytime they want to log onto the internet,” Lesley Dewar said.

“The site helps overcome separation anxiety for children, because families can have multiple logins of the same membership, at the same time, and chat over Skype about the stories,” she said.

“With eight to twelve questions on each story included and links to internet research sites, Stories My Nana Tells encourages reading and learning in a family environment.

“I write stories for children aged 7-12 yrs that will spark their curiosity, entertain and educate them. I write about pets, travel, nature, unique and unusual things.”

“It has been predicted that by 2013, labour demands will result in an estimated 38,000 additional employees being required by the minerals and energy sector, with shortages expected to impact business sustainability. Many of those additional employees are expected to be women,”[i] said Lesley.

www.storiesmynanatells.com is a family based membership site that publishes a new story every two weeks, for paid subscribers. Because it is internet based, it is simple and easy to share the stories, from anywhere in the world, with children you love.

For guests as well as Members, the Stories My Nana Tells website has:

  • free activities,
  • sample stories,
  • ongoing introductions to featured characters
  • an online WordPress blog, where moderated comments and questions can be posted.

Because of legal age restrictions, the popular Facebook page, (www.facebook.com/storiesmynanatells ) and Twitter account (www.twitter.com/nanastories) are only available to persons over the age of 13.

To help parents monitor internet safety, logging on to the premium site requires both a membership number and a password. Each story from Stories My Nana Tells (which is delivered as in Adobe® PDF format) has links to well-researched, appropriate websites which can be monitored by parents through their membership log-in.

A full year’s subscription for Stories My Nana Tells is AU$132 or by monthly payments of AU$15, on direct debit. This is great value for these priceless stories and the joy families will experience in sharing them together.
