Is Your Facebook Page Invisible Overseas?

Over the past twelve months or so, we posted the link for the Facebook page for Stories My Nana Tells in different LinkedIn discussions and in referral threads in other networks where we share membership.

Over and over again, we were advised that whenever the link was clicked, that person was returned to their own Facebook home page. No one had any suggestions as to what was happening and we mostly thought it was a LinkedIn problem.

After Lesley Dewar came back from a six week trip around the US and Canada, with no change to the number of likes on the Facebook page: http://www.Facebook.com/storiesmynanatells it was an issue that could no longer be ignored. It had to be resolved.

After a series of messages, emails and tests with a friend overseas, she suggested we check the settings for the page. Stories My Nana Tells

When we checked the settings for our Facebook page Stories My Nana Tells we found that the page was set to only be visible in Australia. What a disaster for me – when I had just spent six weeks in the US and Canada – promoting the global launch of the business Stories My Nana Tells Home Page

We have no idea how or why the setting was made as it was – but if you have a Facebook business page, make sure that you check the settings for its visibility outside its country of origin.

You may be excluding your business page from a very large part of your global market. The first warning sign of a visibility setting problem is when those outside your country of origin for the Facebook page tell you that they are being returned to THEIR own home page on Facebook when they click on the link for your page.

If anyone tells you they have this problem, be glad you read this post and check your visibility settings. It may be the simple answer you need.

  1. Thanks for sharing that with us. I am in the process of using Facebook and LinkedIn more to promote my business. I will make sure to check the settings.

    • Audrey – I have been a bit surprised to find out how many people have had this problem and the answer was not well known. Happy to have been able to help, even if is it more in the “be careful” stage. Thanks for the comment.

  2. Thank you so much for this as we also have had a similar issue a few months . I initially thought like you it was a Linkedin connection problem but fortunately it was resolved by our technical guy. Now I know and understand WHY we had the problem so many thanks Lesley. Hope all is going well for you now and that your overseas visit was a great success

    • Amnuai – I remember when we had that problem, you and I, and we could not sort it out for the life of either of us. Thankfully it is now resolved. It’s a shame that it wasn’t sorted until after I got back from the US trip – but I still made a lot of excellent connections over there and had absolutely the best time. I was a success from the point of meeting real friends and the rest will follow. Thanks for the nice comment on LinkedIn, too.
