Being named the Tweeting Star of the Australian Election Campaign in 2010 was a huge surprise for Lesley Dewar. It led to a unexpected interview! In fact, to several of them.
Not only with Kerri-Anne Kennerley, live on TV, but to a telephone interview at 5:30am from Radio New Zealand, and others from around the world.

In this post, there is a link to “Nana Lesley” being interviewed by Radio NZ at 5:30 in the morning, as an Australian Grandmother, about Twitter and Australia politics. That aside, it is something of a surprise to hear she declared in 2010 that her reason for coming to Twitter was to create an identity for her new coming business Stories My Nana Tells.
Having joined Twitter in 2008, and not actually selling her financial planning business until 2009, that was quite forward planning.
Getty Images photograph used around the world, and an interview from New Zealand.
After her interview on the Kerri-Anne Kennerley show, Getty Images sent a professional photographer to get some file photos.
Imagine their shock, horror!!! Someone who “might” be having an impact on the election and they not having a photograph on file. How hilarious!
The photograph soon turned up in a French newspaper, to depict a modern Tweeting Grandparent. The article discussed what kind of internet France should build for the future, and it was drawing comparisons with Australia. Their issues closely related with the problems the Australian Government is having with rolling out the NBN, due to the sparsity of population in certain areas.
Visiting New York
As an aside, that black Greek fisherman’s hat was a favourite of Lesley’s. She lost it while she was touring around New York on the upper level of a “hop on – hop off” tour bus. There was no saving it!
Funny how it has taken her seven years to get to where the business is today! It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
